The new breed of perma-renters
Posted on January 21st, 2010
The Marketplace.org story: The new breed of perma-renters profiles couple Milan Mashonovich and Rebecca Eggeman, both in their mid-30′s and still renters in Santa Barbara, California.
Milan and Rebecca both have graduate degrees, high-paying jobs, excellent credit, a new baby — and absolutely no plans to buy a house.Rebecca Eggeman: I kind of got the impression that people felt sorry for us because we were renting. I’d say, “We’re moving,” and the response would be, “Did you buy a house?” You know? And I’d be like “Well, no, we’re still renting.”
Still renting. In a culture obsessed with home ownership, still renting makes Milan and Rebecca feel like social outcasts.
Mashonovich: It has to make financial sense. I mean, look, we’re not in some weird sect.
As a home owner, I love the perma-renters – that is because I am also a small landlord. I love that my tenants have paid for my investment rental and are now helping me pay off my primary mortgage (and only remaining debt). Once I am mortgage free I look forward to my tenants paying my property taxes, insurance, utilities, maintenance costs and more.
Yes, being a landlord is not for everyone and yes, I do deal with the occasional tenant related headache – but the long term financial benefits has sold me on this housing/business model. My dream tenant is the perma-renter – someone who stays for years and reduces my turnover.
